Carpeting
Understanding a few simple basics about carpet construction and the different styles that are trendy today will help you make good choices. Quality is gauged by type of fiber, twist and density used to make the carpet.
Carpet Construction
Fiber
Fiber is converted into yarn that is tufted or sewn into a backing that forms the pile or surface that we walk on.
With Bulked Continuous Filament (BCF) nylon, continuous strands of fiber are formed into yarn. Staple (spun) nylon has been cut into shorter lengths, giving the yarn added bulk and a more wool-like appearance when finished.
Twist
Twist is the number of times that fiber strands are twisted together in a one-inch length. Twist affects the look of the carpet and its long term durability. A higher twist level improves the carpet's resistance to matting and crushing.
Density
Density is a measurement of the amount of yarn in the carpet and how close the tufts are to one another. We think of density in terms of how thick the carpet feels. Higher density improves comfort underfoot and performance.
Durability
Durability or performance ratings are useful tools in helping you choose the right carpet for your new home. Carpet testing laboratories use a standardized mechanical test based on foot traffic for a four-person household over a one-year period.
A carpet with a higher performance rating (4 or 5-Heavy Traffic) will maintain its new appearance much longer than a carpet with a lower rating (2 or 3-Light/Medium Traffic).
Carpet Styling
Selecting a particular style of carpet is a matter of personal choice.
Saxony
Saxony is a cut pile carpet with a smooth, Saxony level finish. Footprints and vacuum marks will be visible.
Textured Saxony
Textured Saxony is a popular cut pile carpet taking advantage of increased twist and added yarn crimping. This style minimizes footprints and vacuum marks and is great for all areas.
Berber
Loop-pile (Berber) can have loops that are either the same height or of multiple heights. Berber styles can have flecks of darker colors on a lighter background, or can be a solid color. Berbers of various heights can be constructed to create different patterns and textures. This style provides good durability and a more casual look.
If you have indoor pets, Berber is not a good choice for paws and claws.
Patterned
Patterned (cut/uncut) carpet blends loops and cut pile in various heights to create a multitude of patterns, from florals to pin dots.
